SINGAPORE — Two general practitioners who were banned from performing liposuction after the death of a patient were charged in a district court yesterday with failing to adhere to proper procedures.

Wong Meng Hang, 38, and Zhu Xiu Chun, 50, are accused of breaching the Hospitals and Medical Clinics Act between November 2008 and August 2009. Wong faces 26 charges, while Zhu is accused of five. The alleged breaches include performing liposuction on those who each had a body mass index of more than 28.

In 2009, property management boss Franklin Heng, 44, died after the doctors performed liposuction on him. Their clinic, which has since been renamed Yume Aesthetic & Medical Clinic, was also charged yesterday with allowing the doctors to perform liposuction on patients without the assistance of a qualified medical professional. They could be jailed up to two years and fined S$20,000 on each count. CLAIRE HUANG
