SINGAPORE — Two men aged 24 and 30 were charged in a district court on Tuesday (May 12) with causing grievous hurt to another man in the wee hours of Sunday at Chua Chu Kang Cemetery.

The younger man, Gervan Wong Jun Heng, and Andre Chen Si’en are accused of assaulting 30-year-old Douglas Wong Wei Hao with a metal baton and knuckleduster.

Court documents showed that they allegedly struck him on his head and body, leaving him with a fractured hand, puncture wounds and lacerations on his legs, multiple abrasions on his arms and legs, and lacerations on his forehead and head.

Chen’s lawyer told the court that they were at the cemetery as Mr Douglas Wong had allegedly raped a woman whom Chen knew. No other details were given.

The police said on Monday that Mr Douglas Wong was found with multiple injuries along Bishan Street 12 at about 5.40am on Sunday. He was taken in a conscious state to the hospital.

Gervan Wong and Chen were arrested within 10 hours of a police report lodged over the incident.

Both men were remanded at the Woodlands Police Division headquarters for investigations to be conducted. They will return to court next week.

If convicted of causing grievous hurt with a weapon likely to cause death, they could either be jailed for life or up to 15 years, and fined or caned.

This was the third violent incident reported on Sunday, apart from a brawl in the wee hours at Chinatown and an alleged murder at night in Punggol.

Three men have been arrested for rioting over the Chinatown fight, while no one has been apprehended yet after a 38-year-old man, who was found badly injured at Punggol Field, died.

GERVAN WONG’S OTHER CHARGES

Gervan Wong already faces 24 other charges, two of which are violence-related.

On the morning of May 11 last year, he allegedly struck a man named Yuen De Cheng inside a room at Studio M Hotel, located in the Robertson Quay area, on the back of his head and on his upper lip with an extendable baton.

Court documents showed that he had also purportedly allowed Yuen, who did not hold a Class 3 driving licence, to drive a car along Kramat Lane earlier that morning.

Gervan Wong is further accused of having driven the same car from Chua Chu Kang to Kramat Lane without displaying the distinguishing mark required for those with a provisional driving licence. He also allegedly did not have the necessary insurance to drive it.

Provisional driving licence holders are only allowed to drive with an instructor.

On Oct 27 last year, along with two others, Gervan Wong is said to have slashed two men with a knife at the basement carpark of Marina Bay Sands at 6am.

For that incident, he faces a charge of voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon likely to cause death, which attracts a punishment of up to seven years’ jail, a fine, caning, or any combination of the three.

Court documents stated that he also allegedly drove along Yishun earlier that morning without displaying the provisional driver’s licence distinguishing mark or having insurance.

According to court documents, he also attempted to consume MDMA tablets — commonly known as ecstasy or molly — and took methamphetamine around Oct 29 last year.

His other charges are mostly driving-related. On April 27 last year, he allegedly failed to give way to a van and caused a rear collision along Kim Keat Link towards Lorong 6 Toa Payoh.

Three days before this, he allegedly drove at 84 km/h along Upper Thomson Road towards Lornie Road. The speed limit there is 70 km/h.
