SINGAPORE — The music video for Our Singapore, this year’s National Day Parade (NDP) theme song, has been released.
The song, celebrating Singapore’s 50th year of independence, was written and performed by Mr Dick Lee. He features in the video, directed by film-maker Eric Khoo, which transitions from a montage of black and white scenes of Singapore’s past, to coloured scenes scenes showing images such as the Republic’s skyline, housing estates and national day celebrations.
The video has been uploaded on YouTube and was also posted on Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen’s Facebook page.
A message on the official NDP website said the song “calls on Singaporeans to not take the present achievements for granted, that the pioneering spirit continues to be important, and with a spirit of togetherness, create a brighter and better Singapore going forward”.
Mr Lee was behind 1998’s Home, which was performed by singer Kit Chan, and is often cited as one of Singaporeans’ favourite National Day songs. He also wrote 2002’s We Will Get There, performed by singer Stefanie Sun.
At an event to outline plans for this year’s NDP earlier this month, Mr Lee said he was initially apprehensive about composing a new number that would inevitably be compared to Home, but he decided to take it on as he felt that plans for SG50 had “a lot of focus on the past and not enough about the future”.
He said: “This song is different from ‘Home’ because ‘Home’ is about the now; this song is about tomorrow.”
