SINGAPORE — The second half of February is expected to be drier than the first half of the month, with maximum temperatures expected to reach 34°C on days with little or no rain.

The Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) said in a weather update on Thursday (Feb 16) that localised short-duration thundery showers can still be expected in the afternoon over parts of the island on some days due to a convergence of prevailing winds with the sea breeze.

The agency added that the prevailing Northeast Monsoon conditions are forecast to continue into the second fortnight of the month.

At the same time, the presence of a dry air mass may also bring relatively fair and occasionally windy conditions to Singapore on a few days in the coming two weeks.

Low-level winds over the island and the surrounding region are forecast to blow mostly from the northeast or northwest.

The daily temperature forecast for the rest of February is expected to range between 24°C and 33°C on most days.

However, on days with little or no rain, the maximum temperature could reach around 34°C.

Overall, near-average rainfall can be expected for the second half of the month and the total rainfall for February is likely be above average over most parts of the island.

In its review of the first half of February, MSS said that thundery showers fell over parts of the island in the afternoon and evening on most days.

On the afternoon of Feb 12, large-scale convergence of winds over Singapore and the surrounding region led to the development of moderate to heavy thundery showers over many areas of the island.

The showers were particularly intense over the northern and western parts of Singapore.

This led to Woodlands recording the highest daily total rainfall of 108.1mm for the first half of the month.

The first fortnight also saw well-above-average rainfall across the island. The highest anomaly of 308 per cent above average was at Sentosa, while the anomaly was lowest around the Mandai area at 51 per cent above average.

Temperature was “relatively cool” in the first half of February, with just one day when the daily maximum temperature was higher than 34°C, the agency said.

The highest daily maximum temperature of 34.2°C was recorded at Ang Mo Kio on Feb 10.

The daily minimum temperature hovered around 23°C on most days, with the lowest minimum temperature of 21.3°C recorded at Jurong on Feb 15.
