SINGAPORE — A 28-year-old construction worker died after a crane collapsed at a worksite in Novena on Monday (Nov 4).

A 35-year-old worker was also injured and taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH).

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call for help at a construction site in Jalan Tan Tock Seng at about 8.50am.

“A boom of a tower crane had collapsed at the construction site and a man was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic,” said the SCDF.

The deceased is an Indian national and an employee at LKT Contractors Pte Ltd while the injured worker is a Bangladeshi national and an employee at BHCC Construction Pte Ltd, said the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

A spokesperson said that the “jib of a tower crane failed during a lifting operation”, killing one and injuring the other, and that MOM is investigating the incident.

The worksite, which will house TTSH’s new rehabilitation complex, is currently being developed by MOH Holdings Pte Ltd and occupied by Kajima Overseas Asia (Singapore) Pte Ltd. Construction began in March 2017 and is scheduled to complete by 2022.

In response to TODAY’s queries, a Ministry of Health (MOH) spokesperson said that work has been halted at the site.

“We are deeply saddened that one worker has died and another worker was injured from the incident,” the spokesperson said.

“We are now working with the main contractor Kajima Overseas Asia (Singapore) Pte Ltd to render assistance to the deceased worker’s family, as well as to the injured worker.”

The ministry is working with the contractor and the Ministry of Manpower to investigate the cause of the incident, the spokesperson added.

A video uploaded by Facebook user Sma Rocky of the collapsed crane showed that the boom — the long arm on the crane that is used to move objects — was twisted.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story stated that the injured worker was an Indian national and an employee at BTCC Construction. This was incorrect. The manpower ministry has clarified that he is Bangladeshi and an employee at BHCC Construction.
