SINGAPORE — The Workers’ Party (WP) has appointed Ms Nicole Seah, 34, as president of its youth wing, and its youngest Central Executive Committee (CEC) member, Ms Raeesah Khan, 27, as deputy treasurer.

Dr Jamus Lim, 44, who is part of its elected Sengkang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) team alongside Ms Raeesah, was appointed deputy head of its policy research team. This is a new post that was not in the opposition party’s previous CECs.

The other two Sengkang GRC Members of Parliament (MPs), Ms He Ting Ru, 37, and Mr Louis Chua, 33, were appointed deputy organising secretary and deputy head of WP’s media team respectively.

WP announced the appointments in a statement on Wednesday (Jan 6), a day after its CEC met to approve of the appointments.

The CEC was elected during a cadre members’ conference on Dec 27, bringing in a younger slate of members into the party’s decision-making body. They include the four Sengkang GRC MPs and Ms Seah, who was part of WP’s East Coast GRC team that lost with 46.59 per cent of the vote.

Mr Pritam Singh, 44, and Ms Sylvia Lim, 55, who are MPs for Aljunied GRC, were already re-elected as secretary-general and chairman respectively in that meeting.

WP’s new CEC also comprises long-time party member Kenneth Foo, 43, who returned to holding the title of WP’s deputy organising secretary, a post which he had held from 2016 to 2018. He was not in the 2018 CEC.

Former youth wing president, Aljunied GRC MP Leon Perera, 50, was appointed head of the media team — a post that Dr Daniel Goh had vacated last April, after stepping down due to a health condition.

Aljunied GRC MP Gerald Giam, 43, remained as party treasurer, a position that he had filled since 2018, and will also lead the policy research team.

Mr Faisal Manap, 45, the fifth Aljunied GRC MP, and Mr Dennis Tan, 50, who is now MP for WP stronghold Hougang Single Member Constituency, remained as vice-chair and organising secretary of the party respectively.

Former WP chief Low Thia Khiang, 64, and former organising secretary Png Eng Huat, 59, have not held any posts in the CEC since 2018, and that continues to be the case in this CEC.

Nevertheless, WP said in its statement that Mr Low and Mr Png were elected and “continue to serve as members of the CEC”.
