SINGAPORE — After taking a drunk 16-year-old girl to his apartment's toilet to vomit during an acquaintance's birthday party, Rajama Samuel Doctorian Purba became sexually aroused and decided to molest and rape her.

For his actions in 2020, Rajama, who was 18 at the time, was sentenced to eight years’ jail and six strokes of the cane on Monday (Aug 15).

The Indonesian national, now 20, pleaded guilty in the High Court to one count of rape. One charge of outrage of modesty and another charge of possessing five obscene films on his mobile phone were taken into consideration for sentencing.

His teenage victim, who was studying in a secondary school at the time of the offence, cannot be named due to a gag order to protect her identity.

The court heard that Rajama was pursuing a diploma in a private school in Singapore. He was renting a one-bedroom apartment at a Balestier condominium with another 19-year-old Indonesian teen.

The victim was invited to the apartment by a mutual male friend of Rajama's roommate for a birthday celebration. She was initially hesitant because she did not know anyone else at the gathering, but decided to go in the end.

On the evening of Nov 6, 2020, the group sat in the living room to play card games and drink alcohol including whiskey and Jagermeister liqueur, mixed with a combination of Red Bull and Coca-Cola.

She grew dizzy during the party and told the group she wanted to vomit.

Rajama escorted her to the toilet in his bedroom, locking the room door behind them. He then cleaned up the toilet after she vomited into the toilet bowl.

It was then that he realised she was completely unconscious, the court further heard.

He became sexually aroused, took her to his bed and groped her chest. When she did not react, he raped her.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Kavita Uthrapathy told the court that the victim was drifting in and out of consciousness at this point, but was unable to move or resist due to her intoxication.

After some time, Rajama stopped his assault, dressed the victim and took her to the toilet where she vomited once more. He then left the bedroom and rejoined the other men in the living room.

Later on, his roommate went to the bedroom to use the toilet. He then scolded Rajama for being disrespectful by leaving the victim on the toilet floor in such a condition.

In response, Rajama confessed to his roommate about having sexual intercourse with the victim in a drunken state. They then returned to the living room and continued to drink.

The victim and her friend took a private-hire car back to his flat, where she told him Rajama had violated her. She also confided in her ex-boyfriend after returning home and being unable to stop thinking about what Rajama had done.

She lodged a police report on her ex-boyfriend’s advice. Rajama was arrested on Nov 8, 2020 at his apartment and has been remanded since.

The victim was assessed at the Institute of Mental Health’s Child Guidance Clinic where she was found to have mild psychological distress.

She told psychologists there that she tried to struggle during Rajama’s assault but was too weak to stop him.

DPP Uthrapathy sought seven to 10 years’ jail and six strokes of the cane, arguing that Rajama took advantage of the victim to gravely violate her and expose her to the risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Rajama’s defence counsel, Mr Nasser Ismail, told the court that he was remorseful and had intended to plead guilty from an early stage.

For rape, Rajama could have been jailed for up to 20 years as well as fined or caned.
