Full club-by-club list of summer transfers below after the live updates
7.45am: And with that, by dawn’s not-so-early light now, we end this live blog of the dramatic final hours (plus injury time) of the English Premier League summer 2013 transfer window. More reports and analysis on the big signings (Mesut Ozil to Arsenal, Marouane Fellaini to Manchester United), the tactical winners (Everton, Arsenal) and losers (United, some will say) in the coming hours and days.
In the meantime,
don’t forget to sign up for the TODAY Fantasy League — Manager of the Season wins US$5,000. Kick off is on Sept 14 after the international break.
7.30am: BBC Sport has reported that Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao will not be joining Manchester United on loan. United submitted the paperwork on time before the 11pm (6am, Singapore time) deadline, as reported here at 6.52am. However, the move would only be confirmed if both clubs entered “the correct details of the deal on FIFA’s new transfer matching system. The deadline for that system closed at midnight”, reported Ben Smith.
7.10am: Everton, hailed by some as the big winners of the final day in the transfer window, confirm on their Twitter account their three acquisitions and two sales made during the final few hours. They’re up £20 million in cash, thanks largely to the £27.5 million-sale of Marouane Fellaini to Manchester United (a great price, for the Toffees, considering United last offered £36 million for both Fellaini and Leighton Baines), swapped Victor Anichebe for Chelsea’s “new Drogba” Romelo Lukaku on loan (though Jose Mourinho doesn’t rate him ahead of Demba Ba and Fernando Torres), brought in Man City’s England international Gareth Barry and snapped up James McCarthy from Wigan. While still holding on to left-back Leighton Baines.
7.05am: Shane Long’s move from West Bromwich Albion to Hull City has apparently collapsed.
6.50am: Fans have been drooling over the new Arsenal midfield of Walcott, Ozil, Wilshere and Cazorla. How do Manchester United fans think their midfield is going to shape up now with Marouane Fellaini in? Will he work well with Carrick and Kagawa? BBC commentator and former footballer Robbie Savage has said he’s “gobsmacked” that United didn’t address their lack of creativity in the middle and that Fellaini isn’t the answer.
6.40am: It’s still uncertain if Manchester United secured the services of Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao in a loan deal. Some reports in Spain say the fax (yes, they still do it that way in football) came in too late, other say it made it on time (the deadline is an hour later in Spain than in England). Stay tuned.
6.30am: Everton update: Three in, two out. The Toffees have signed Chelsea’s Romelo Lukaku on loan and acquired Gareth Barry from Manchester City and Wigan’s James McCarthy. Marouane Fellaini and Victor Anichebe are out the door to Manchester United and West Brom, respectively.
6.27am: The deal went through on time and Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini is now a Manchester United player in a £27.5 million deal, the Guardian has confirmed. I know it’s cold comfort, Everton fans, but look on the briight side: Leighton Baines is still at Goodison. Chin up.
6.25am: More on the collapse of Manchester United’s bid for Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera, which is now being blamed on imposters posing as United officials showing up at the offices of the Spanish league. The Guardian’s Daniel Taylor reports:
“The details are a bit sketchy but I’ve just had it confirmed from Old Trafford that the people who were in Spain, apparently negotiating on their behalf for Ander Herrera, were not sent there by the club and can accurately be described as ‘impostors’.
“Who on earth they were, no idea. But clearly they were trying to get in on the deal and it has ended in embarrassment for everyone. I get the feeling United are furious.
“Their official explanation is that they simply couldn’t persuade Bilbao to bring down the buyout clause and it was as straightforward as that (even though there is a clause, it doesn’t mean the potential buyer has to meet it). However, there have clearly been all sorts of fun and games going on in the background and it’s an embarrassment, to say the least.”
6.15am: As Arsenal fans celebrate their club’s record £42.4 million signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid, the German star who terrorised England at the 2010 World Cup, Manchester United fans are fuming over their club’s lack of any major acquisitions this summer (pending confirmation or otherwise of a Marouane Fellaini deal). CEO Edward Woodword and new manager David Moyes are the main targets, with one supporter noting: “Sir Alex would never have left things to the last minute, like this.”
And then there’s the collapse of the Ander Herrera deal due to impostors, posing as United officials, at the Spanish league offices. More to come on that sensational story.
6.10am: Fulham confirm signing of Elsad Zverotic from Swiss club BSC Young Boys on a two-year contract. Source: BBC
6.05am: Everton update: Wigan chairman Dave Whelan confirms to the BBC that they received an offer in the region of £13 million for James McCarthy, but it remains to be seen if Everton got their paperwork filed in time to meet the 11pm (6am, Singapore time) transfer deadline. Yet another Latic at Goodison Park, joining their old boss and Everton’s new gaffer Roberto Martinez.
6am: The EPL transfer window has shut, with confirmation still pending on some big moves. Did Marouane Fellaini’s late bid to leave Everton for Manchester United go through? Did out-of-favour Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry really show up at Everton at the very last minute for talks? Will third-choice Chelsea striker Romelo Lukaku head to Everton or back to West Brom for another loan spell? Stay tuned ...
5.53am: Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla (@19SCazorla) welcomes his new team-mate, tweeting: “Welcome Mesut Ozil. Such an amazing player!” (translated from Spanish, of course)
And the tweet from Jack Wilshere (@JackWilshere): “Signing of the summer! Easily! Fantastic player, plays the ‘Arsenal way’. Welcome Mesut Ozil, absolutely buzzing!”
That’s going to be some midfield: Walcott, Ozil, Wilshere, Cazorla ...
5.50am: Manchester United update: Club’s explanation for late implosion of Ander Herrera deal is that they thought buyout clause in midfielder’s Athletic Bilbao contract was the wrong valuation and couldn’t get it down. If the Marouane Fellaini deal isn’t confirmed in the next 10 minutes, it will mean zero major signings by new manager David Moyes.
5.40am: Manchester City’s out-of-favour Gareth Barry spotted at Everton for talks. With less than 20 minutes to go until the transfer window shuts. Get in there, son.
5.40am: Arsene Wenger on Arsenal’s record signing Mesut Ozil: “He is a great player, with proven quality at both club and international level. We have watched and admired him for some time as he has all the attributes I look for in an Arsenal player.”
Ozil’s statement on his Facebook page: “Dear fans of Real Madrid. Thank you very much for three wonderful years with all of you. My time at Real Madrid was unique and special for me.
“Sometimes things develop differently, than I would have expected them to a few days ago. Although I’m leaving Real Madrid, I wish you and the team the very best for the future.
“Now, I’m looking forward to my new club: THE GUNNERS!”
5.28am: Arsenal finally confirm its club-record signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid. The price-tag on the Germany international midfielder: £42.4 million. With Ozil combining with Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla, the Gunners midfield is going to be a thing of beauty.
5.25am: Another Liverpool alumnus arrives at Sunderland: Left-back Andrea Dossena joins from Napoli.
5.23am: West Brom break transfer record to sign Sunderland’s midfield maestro Stephane Sessegnon.
5.20am: Liverpool’s Italian striker Fabio Borini has joined struggling Sunderland on loan for the season. Borini is the 12th signing at the Stadium of Light this summer.
5.10am: Latest: Spanish newspaper AS have said that Manchester United are pulling out of the Ander Herrera deal after baulking at buy-out clause in his Athletic Bilbao contract. Sky Sports’ Spanish correspondent Guillem Balague says the deal is “completely dead” and, in an odd twist, that the men purportedly from Manchester United at the Spanish league offices were not in fact United officials. More to come.
5am: Manchester United update: According to Sky Bet’s transfer specials, the odds on the Red Devils signing Ander Herrera have drifted to 7/1 while the odds-makers are confident Everton’s Marouane Fellaini is headed to Old Trafford with short odds of 1/2.
4.45am: West Brom’s striking problem, with regards to strikers, may soon be resolved. Chelsea’s Romelo Lukaku, who shone while on loan at WBA last season with 17 goals in 35 appearances, has been spotted back at the club’s training ground today. Lukaku has stated that he prefers a return to the Hawthornes over a loan move to Everton that Chelsea is considering.
4.40am: Latest: Wigan take Manchester United’s 19-year-old midfielder Nick Powell on loan for the season.
4.35am: Arsenal update: There are “no issues or problems” surrounding the Gunners’ club-record signing of Mesut Ozil, the deal is “being processed” and the club plans to announce it within the next hour or so (before the window shuts at 6am, Singapore time), says the BBC. Meanwhile, Chelsea say they won’t loan out striker Demba Ba to Arsenal, their London rivals, leading Arsene Wenger to call off the proposed sale of Niklas Bendtner to Crystal Palace.
4.20am: Manchester United’s £30.5 million bid for Athletic Bilbao’s 24-year-old midfielder Ander Herrera has run into ‘bureaucratic problems”, Sky is reporting. United are said to be seeking an extra hour beyond the transfer deadline (11pm London time, 6am today, Singapore time) to see the deal through. Meanwhile, Sky is also saying that Everton’s Marouane Fellaini has handed in a transfer request and is set on leaving, but with less than two hours until the transfer window slams shut, the Red Devils are now in a race against time.
4am: Tottenmham full-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto is headed to second-tier side QPR, rejoining his former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp there. Assou-Ekotto tweeted at 3.52am (Singapore time): “I ll keep one eyes on u spurs hv a good luck this season #COYS <3”. A sweet farewell from the Cameroonian international and rare footballer, who is probably the only current pro to have honestly declared (in a 2010 interview) that he plays for the money and that “football is not my passion”.
3.45am: Update on Chelsea’s wantaway strikers Demba Ba and Romelo Lukaku from The Daily Mirror: West Ham have been told that Ba is staying, while Lukaku is keen on returning to West Brom where he shone last season. After it was made clear that Lukaku is third in the pecking order behind Fernando Torres and Ba, there may be some truth to the rumours that other clubs are keen on stealing him away from Stamford Bridge.
3.30am: Everton’s be-afroed Marouane Fellani may have submitted a transfer request, reporters camped out around the Toffees training ground are speculating. The Belgian attacking midfielder/yellow card-magnet is wanted by his former boss David Moyes at Manchester United.
3.15am: Swansea City have confirmed that they have Getafe striker Alvaro Vazquez will join them a season-long loan.
3am: Real Madrid-to-Arsenal Mesut Ozil deal expected to be confirmed once the Germany international completes a “marathon” medical.
2.45am: Intriguing news out of Everton’s training ground: There is truth to the rumours that Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku could be headed to Goodison Park, the BBC says, while Sky News says the Toffees want the “new Drogba” on a season-long loan. If the Blues let him and Demba Ba go, for good or on loan, that would leave Fernando Torres as their sole recognised striker ...
2.30am: Aston Vila have been busy today, with much of their old guard leaving. Following the signing of Libor Kozak, they’ve let go of midfielder Stephen Ireland (Stoke City, loan) and Barry Bannan (Crystal Palace, undisclosed). Earlier in the transfer window, Richard Dunne left for QPR on a free transfer and Darren Bent is out to Fulham on loan.
2.20am: Juan Mata is not leaving Chelsea, Sky Sports reports, putting paid to rumours that PSG were making a late swoop for the midfielder. The Spanish international has been subject to speculation all summer long and linked with London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham. A slew of midfield signings, including Willian, Andre Schurrle and Marco van Ginkel, plus to return of Kevin de Bruyne from loan, didn’t help. But it Jose Mourinho has insisted Mata remains a key part of his plans, and it appears Mourinho meant it ...
2.15am: Unsettled striker Peter Odemwingie finally leaves West Bromwich Albion, with Cardiff City snapping him up for £2.2 million. If Nicolas Anelka fails to return to training, much less to his old form, the Albion are going to be short on firepower.
2am: We’re close: BBC are reporting that Arsenal and Real Madrid have agreed on a £42.4 million deal for Mesut Ozil. Spanish newspaper Marca say that Ozil will be the most expensive sale in Real’s history, eclipsing the £36 million they got from Manchester City for Robinho in 2008.
1.30am: Aston Villa sign towering centre-forward Libor Kozak from Lazio on a four-year deal. The 6ft 4in (1.93m) Czech striker is reported to have cost about £5m, reports Sky Sports. Expect loads of puns to come this season, as Libor is aslo the acronym for the London Interbank Offered Rate which has been in the news this past year with rate-rigging scandals.
1.20am: West Ham are still hoping to get Chelsea’s Demba Ba on loan ahead of Arsenal and other suitors, according to the BBC. Ba, who moved from Newcastle to Chelsea during the January 2013 transfer window, is thought to not rank below fellow strikers Fernando Torres and Romelo Lukaku in Jose Mourinho’s plans.
1.15am: Palermo goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano joins Arsenal on a season-long loan, with an option to make his move permanent. Viviano has been capped six times by Italy and was once viewed as a successor to Gianluigi Buffon but a torn knee ligament in 2011 didn’t help his cause, reports The Guardian.
1.15am: Crystal Palace sign Jamaican centre-back Adrian Mariappa from Reading. The fee for the three-year deal is undisclosed. Source: The Guardian
1.10am: Everton’s bid to sign Porto midfielder Fernando blocked as their appeal over his work permit rejection fails, according to sources in Portugal. The bid for Fernando was dependent on Marouane Fellaini completing a move to Manchester United, the BBC has reported.
