SINGAPORE — Ahead of his highly-anticipated S.League debut on Monday, ex-Liverpool and Arsenal winger Jermaine Pennant received a timely boost to his morale as his wife, British model Alice Goodwin, and nine-year-old daughter Esme arrived in Singapore this morning (Feb 13).

After more than a month apart, Pennant — who recently penned a one-year deal worth about S$750,000 with Tampines Rovers — was at Changi Airport Terminal Three to welcome his family.

He told TODAY that he believes their presence will help him settle down in Singapore, as well as give him an added impetus to perform even better on the pitch.

“It's a good feeling to have my family here giving me support, I'm sure it will help and make me feel more at home and comfortable here,” said the 33-year-old.

"This will also mean that I’ll get some good food cooked as well!

“It’s always nice to see them both, and I'm going to show them around Singapore a little bit. I’m sure they’ll enjoy their stay here as much as I have.

“I can't wait for our first game (against Geylang International) on Monday. Obviously, we don't know what the playing line-up will be, but I spoke to the manager and he wants to use me. It's been a long and hard month so the whole team and league is looking forward to kick off now.”

Pennant added that his family will be here for a “short trip”, with Esme having to go back to school once her holiday ends.

However, Goodwin is expected to make frequent trips to Singapore in future until a "more concrete arrangement is established".

Goodwin is also eager to see Pennant showcase his talents on the pitch, and keen to experience what Singapore has to offer.

“I'm really looking forward to seeing Jermaine in action,” she said. “I think it's going to be different than what we're used to in England, but fingers crossed that Jermaine can do some good things in it and can get off to a good start.

“He's been telling me only good things (about Singapore). He's been enjoying himself here, made some good friends and he's been enjoying the training and the weather. There's a lot to do, so I'm really looking forward to being here with him.

“It’s also Valentine’s Day tomorrow, so I’m hoping that he’s got something nice planned out for us!”
