Japan national football coach Javier Aguirre fired over match-fixing allegations
TOKYO — The head of the Japan Football Association (JFA) says the body has fired national coach Javier Aguirre over allegations he was involved in match-fixing.

TOKYO — The head of the Japan Football Association (JFA) says the body has fired national coach Javier Aguirre over allegations he was involved in match-fixing.
Kuniya Daini said today (Feb 3) the JFA made the decision in order to avoid compromising Japan’s chances in World Cup qualifying. Daini said Aguirre was informed of the decision and agreed that it was unavoidable.
Former Mexico coach Aguirre became embroiled in a massive match-fixing probe launched by Spain’s state prosecutor in the Spanish league. Aguirre denies any wrongdoing.
Spanish media reports says authorities in Spain are moving to prosecute Aguirre and some 30 others on suspicion of fixing a league game against Levante when he managed Zaragoza in May 2011. AP
