SINGAPORE — Liverpool may not have won the English Premier League title since 1990, but former captain Mark Wright is backing the Merseysiders to break the long drought under the managership of Brendan Rodgers.
Here for the second edition of the IG Masters Football 6’s Singapore Cup taking place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium this Sunday, former England international and Liverpool skipper Mark Wright says the young team that Rodgers has assembled will come good in “three to four years’ time”, if they do not win this season, considering their bright start.
“There is more to come from Liverpool, just like what Brendan said,” he told TODAY. “They’ve played very well in most first halves and not so good in the second half but, most importantly, they are winning games and they are in the top four.
“I’m not sure the team they have now is enough to win the league. But I think with what Brendan is doing, bringing and buying all the youngsters, that certainly bodes well for Liverpool.”
A central defender in his playing days when he earned 45 England caps, Wright is also optimistic about his country’s chances at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The Three Lions, he feels, will need John Terry back in the team to toughen up the back line.
“I’ve got a good funny feeling that we’re going to do well,” Wright said. “We just need a little bit of luck with the draw and if you can get through the group stage of the World Cup, then it becomes anyone’s game.
“The only person I’d like to see being considered and spoken to is John (Terry). I think if you have injuries to (Gary) Cahill or (Phil) Jagielka, then John will be good to have. It makes you feel stronger and a lot more determined with him there.” FELICIA QUICK
