SINGAPORE — Former national waterpolo player and swimmer, Eric Yeo Oon Tat, died yesterday (March 15) at the age of 78.
Yeo was part of the Singapore men’s waterpolo team that competed at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne.
Yeo also helped the national waterpolo team clinched the gold medal in five editions of the biennial Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) — now known as the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games — from 1965 to 1973. He was also a three-time Asian Games medallist.
Yeo also competed in swimming in 1961, where he won three medals.
After his competitive sporting career ended in 1974 when he was 38, he went on to be actively involved in the water polo scene, and was coach of the Singapore national team in 1995. He was also later the vice-president of waterpolo with the Singapore Swimming Association (SSA).
On Yeo’s passing, SSA president Lee Kok Choy said it is a “loss to the swimming community”.
Lee added: “He was a highly motivated sportsman and an inspiration to many pioneering athletes around him.”
