SINGAPORE - Former South Korea international defender Jang Jung, who was also part of the Singapore team that achieved the Malaysian League and Cup double in 1994, paid a surprise visit to Sembawang Primary School this morning as a guest coach for the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Cubs Programme.
The 51-year-old, in Singapore to visit his son who is studying in a local polytechnic, is currently a coach with a high school football team in Seoul after previous stints with S.League clubs Geylang International (then known as Geylang United), and Balestier Khalsa, and the Sri Lanka Football Federation.
It was clear though that Jang was a bigger hit with the parents of the children in the Cubs Programme as many of them still fondly remember him as the tough-tackling defender who marshalled the Singapore backline in the Malaysia Cup in the early 90s - they were the ones who cheered and clapped when he made his appearance, and posed with him for photographs.
Julie Teo, who is the general manager of women’s football and grassroots at the FAS, thanked Jang for taking time off to spend it with the Sembawang Cubs.
“The kids and their parents enjoyed having Jang Jung around, and we hope he can join us again for future sessions,” she said.
