RIO DE JANEIRO - National paddler Yu Mengyu opened her campaign at the Rio Olympic Games in winning fashion on Monday morning (Aug 8), defeating Australia's Lay Jian Fang to advance to the fourth round.
The world No 17 player made light work of her lower ranked opponent (128) as she cruised to a 11-9, 11-9, 11-6, 12-10 victory in her third round contest.
She will play South Korean Jeon Jihee on Tuesday, 3am (Singapore time).
"The competition hall was a little bright at first but I got used to it," said Yu after her win. "My opponent had played two matches before this...I prepared myself well mentally and physically. Tomorrow's opponent will be tougher so I need to prepare for that."
In the men's singles competition earlier on Monday, Singapore's Gao Ning crashed out in the second round after losing 4-3 ro Britain's Paul Drinkhall.
"He played a fast game today, and even though his standard is ok, he played much better than me today," said Gao.
"During two crucial moments in the match, I wasn't able to see the ball due to the glare from the lights."
