LG G2: A gee-whiz machine

SINGAPORE — It must be frustrating for left-handers living in a right-hander world. Taking their needs in hand, LG has released its G2 smartphone that it said will level the playing field for southpaws.

First, by placing the power buttons and scroll up, down keys on the back instead of around the case, LG said it is more accessible to users whether they are left- or right-handed. When you have the phone to your ear, having the buttons on the back also puts the keys within reach of your index finger.

This is just one of the ways the Korean company has “listened to customer feedback to introduce a more intuitive design”. Raising the profile of the power button versus the scroll keys makes it easier to identify which keys you want to use. The scroll keys provide a short cut to the camera and QuickMemo features from the locked screen.

The G2 has 100 improved features over the G Pro, such as the KnockOn feature, which switches on the phone when the screen is tapped twice — an important feature since the power button is now located behind the phone.

It has a 1080 x 1920 resolution display with 423 PPI (pixels per inch) in its Full HD screen for brighter and sharper colours. It also uses proprietary technology dubbed Dual Routing to reduce bezel size and squeeze its 5.2-inch display within a 2.7-inch-wide case.

Shutterbugs will like the 13 megapixel rear camera with OIS (Optical Image Stabiliser) technology. Its Super Resolution promises to provide detailed and clear zoom quality of up to eight times without degrading picture quality. With the improved camera, full HD 60 fps (frames per second), you can shoot your short film on just your phone. An audio zoom feature lets you focus audio recording on the subject in the middle of your frame, making soliloquys clearer.

Audio is improved with Hi-Fi sound. The human ear can only process analogue sounds while electronic devices produce digital sounds. By recreating digital sound in 24bit, 192KHz frequency, it replicates a closer, analogue quality that sounds pure and natural.

With a larger screen, a faster 2.26GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, brighter and sharper resolution, you might be worried about battery life. Let the 3,000 mAh battery set your mind at ease. With regular use, I was able to get it going for about 20 hours on a single charge.

The LG G2 runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 and will be available in stores at S$898 from Sept 21.
