A decent in-ear fitness instructor, for the price

SINGAPORE — The Jabra Sport Coach offers a convenient solution to those seeking a more systematic and disciplined exercise routine.

SINGAPORE — The Jabra Sport Coach offers a convenient solution to those seeking a more systematic and disciplined exercise routine.

The device, which Jabra recommends for cross-fit or high-intensity interval training, allows you to plan, monitor and analyse exercise regimes via in-ear coaching.

The Sport Coach is a simple cord with two earbuds at each end that are used like normal earpieces. An in-line remote near the right earbud has a multifunction button and a volume rocker, while the button that sits on the left earbud is used to control exercises during a workout.

The device works together with the Jabra Sport Life app — available for iOS and Android — that lets users select from 40 different exercises. The app interface is easy to use, and can be used to personalise workouts to accommodate various fitness levels.

The Sport Coach not only tells users what to do, but also contains a TrackFit motion sensor to track distance, pace, steps, cadence and calories burnt should you include running or cycling in your routine.

Throughout the session, music can be played in the background. It dips in volume slightly to accommodate the audio instructions at certain points.

Jabra did a good job designing the earbuds to fit snugly and comfortably, and they did not fall out during rigorous exercise. The device’s water and sweat resistance is top notch and, according to Jabra, on a par with US military standards.

Weighing a mere 16g, the device felt discreet and never caused any discomfort during my exercise.

The battery life lasts for about four to five hours on a full charge, depending on usage intensity. It covered me for two gym sessions before completely running out of juice.

Compared to a real-life fitness instructor, the Jabra Sport Coach does a decent job in telling you what to do, but does not tell you how well or how badly you are doing during a session. And although the device can log data from exercises, it does not make use of the data to plan, improve or modify future sessions.

Those looking for easy exercise guidance at home or in the gym can turn to the Jabra Sport Coach. It provides solid Dolby audio quality for your listening pleasure, and serves as a good way to create a more disciplined exercise routine.

At S$248, it is a little pricey, but still cheaper than coaching fees at the gym. The Jabra Sport Coach is available at Apple Premium resellers, Challenger, Stereo Electronics, Outdoor Sports Travel and other authorised resellers.
