Our frontline healthcare and Home Team workers are doing an exemplary job as Singapore grapples with an outbreak of the novel coronavirus, Covid-19.

Some of them have had to clock longer hours at work and cancel their leave. They are also more susceptible to the virus on the frontlines.

Instead of receiving gratitude from the public, nurses in uniform have had to endure harassment outside their workplace, such as on public transport.

In polyclinics and hospitals, there are notices reminding the public that hurling abuse at healthcare workers will not be tolerated and culprits will be handed over to the police.

This should apply to healthcare workers facing abuse outside their workplace.

For instance, the authorities can tap cameras aboard the various modes of public transport.

Nurses who are harassed or abused on board buses or trains should lodge a police report. They can also approach police officers from the Public Transport Security Command.

If such abuse or harassment is left unchecked, it will embolden others to perpetuate cruel attitudes towards our frontline workers.
