KAJANG (Selangor) — Anwar Ibrahim was sent back to Sungai Buloh Prison shortly after his father’s funeral this evening, ending his brief freedom today (April 5).

He was escorted by around five police officers back to a Prisons Department vehicle while followed by a group of supporters chanting “Reformasi” (Reform), the rally cry of PKR.

His eldest daughter and Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament Nurul Izzah Anwar earlier thanked the attendees who paid their last respects to her grandfather, Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, who died at 1.45am today.

“I thanked Dr Mahathir, Azmin (Ali), Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil for attending, and the rest as well. Also for allowing my father the last chance to visit his,” Ms Nurul Izzah said.

“This was the second time a parent of his died while he was imprisoned.”

Ibrahim was buried on 2.35pm at the Sungai Ramal Luar Muslim graveyard and his funeral was witnessed by around 100 people.

Earlier, Anwar was at his father’s house in Country Heights, Kajang where well-wishers had gathered to pay their respects to the family.

Around 250 people attended, including top leaders from Barisan Nasional and allies from Pakatan Rakyat.

A former Umno lawmaker, Ibrahim had served as Seberang Prai Central MP from 1959 to 1969. He had also been the parliamentary secretary of the Health Ministry from 1964 to 1969.

Anwar is currently serving a five-year jail sentence after the Federal Court on February 10 upheld his conviction for sodomising a former aide. MALAY MAIL ONLINE
