‎Anwar’s father dies

KUALA LUMPUR — Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s father, former United Malay National Organisation (UMNO) member of parliament Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, died today (April 5) at 1.45am. He was 96.

KUALA LUMPUR — Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s father, former United Malay National Organisation (UMNO) member of parliament Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, died today (April 5) at 1.45am. He was 96.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said her father-in-law’s body has been brought to Lot 459 Pinggir Pelangi Pagi, Country Heights, Kajang, and was expected to be buried at the Sungai Ramal cemetery in the afternoon.

“The first time DSAI (Anwar) was jailed, he was tested with the death of his mother and that of Ustaz Fadhil Noor,” wrote Dr Wan Azizah on Facebook, referring to former PAS president, Mr Fadhil Noor.

“This time he is tested with the death of TGNA (Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat) and now, his father.

“I am forced to cancel all my programmes in Penang today and rush home to Kajang,” she said.

Mr Ibrahim was member of parliament for Seberang Perai Central from 1959 to 1969, and was also a parliamentary secretary.

Among those who arrived to pay their last respects this morning was former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Anwar Ibrahim arrived at the home of his father to bid his final farewell to the latter who died.

The jailed PKR de facto leader was given special dispensation to leave Sungai Buloh Prison to visit his father at the latter’s home in Country Heights here.

Anwar arrived shortly after 11am and is currently inside the house.

Top leaders from Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) were also spotted paying their final respects, including Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, PKR’s N Surendran and DAP’s Liew Chin Tong.

Anwar’s daughter and Lembah Pantai lawmaker Nurul Izzah, arrived at noon and briefly acknowledged relatives in attendance before entering the house to pay her last respect to Mr Ibrahim.

Selangor chief minister Azmin Ali arrived around the same time as Anwar, as did UMNO Women’s chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
