Political turmoil in Malaysia: The latest twists and turns
Dr Mahathir Mohamad (right) and Mr Anwar Ibrahim are locked in a power struggle in the latest round of political upheaval to sweep Malaysia.
Dr Mahathir Mohamad resigned as Malaysia’s prime minister on Monday (Feb 24), after a weekend of intense speculation that he would lead his political party – Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) – to exit the ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition and form a new government with new coalition partners.
Rumours began swirling on Sunday following secretive meetings by numerous Malaysian politicians at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Then, on Monday, Dr Mahathir submitted his resignation letter to the Malaysian King at 1pm, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
The ruling PH government has also collapsed following the exit of multiple lawmakers from the coalition.
