AL RAYYAN, QATAR — South Korean captain Son Heung-min was left in tears on Monday (Nov 28) after his football team's 3-2 loss to Ghana all but dashed their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup's round of 16.
However, this did not stop one excited opposition staff member from trying to snap a selfie with the Tottenham Hotspur star, sparking outrage online.
As Son broke down on the pitch after the final whistle, Ghana players and coaches tried to console him in a touching show of sportsmanship, including assistant coaches Mas-Ud Didi Dramani and George Boateng.
Then, in a video clip that has been making the rounds on social media, one member of Ghana's team puts his arm around Son and pats his shoulder — before smoothly whipping out his phone and angling his face for the camera.
Boateng quickly notices and tells the staff member off while Son turns away.
Football fans have been saying the man is likely to be a security officer for the Ghana team.
Many were baffled by the man's behaviour, slamming him for being "shameless" and having "no decorum".
Others, though, found the video hilarious, complimenting the man's "low-key" selfie skills and declaring that they would have done the same.
One Korean fan on Twitter wrote: "I understand... When will he (be able to) take a selfie with Son Heung-min again?"
Some also likened the incident to a similar post-match photo from the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool in 2018.
After the match, Dubai-based celebrity chef Nusret Gokce or "Salt Bae" posted a photo with a downcast and injured Mohamed Salah.
The Liverpool forward had left the field in tears after dislocating his shoulder less than 30 minutes into the match, in what he recently called "the worst moment in (his) career". In his absence, his team suffered a 3-1 defeat.
At the time, fans were similarly outraged by Salt Bae's "disrespect".
MATCH REFEREE ANTHONY TAYLOR FACES BACKLASH
The referee for the South Korea versus Ghana match, English Premier League referee Anthony Taylor, is also facing widespread backlash on social media after denying South Korea one last corner kick in Monday's game.
Following a confrontation by South Korea coach Paulo Bento, Taylor sent the coach off with a red card, banning him from his team's crucial deciding match against Portugal on Friday.
Only a win over Portugal in their final Group H game on Saturday will keep the South Koreans in the World Cup.
GHANA FANS CLEAN UP STADIUM AFTER MATCH
As for the Ghana fans, it seems they took a leaf out of the Japanese fans' book to celebrate their win by cleaning up at the Education City Stadium after the match.
Japanese football fans have long been known for their habit of cleaning up the stands after matches. This World Cup at Qatar, the orderly supporters have gone viral once again for staying behind to clean up not only after their victory over Germany, but also after their loss to Costa Rica.
Likewise, the Japanese players left their changing room "spotless" after the historic win against Germany. They even left behind origami paper cranes, with 11 to represent each player, and a thank-you note written in both Japanese and Arabic.
