UZBEKISTAN — A video of a groom in Uzbekistan, who violently hit his bride on the head after he lost to her in a game during their wedding, has gone viral on Twitter and one video posted on Monday (June 13) was viewed a million times.

In the video, the newlyweds are seen standing on a brightly lit stage with their best man and maid of honour, seemingly taking part in a game. The emcee announces the bride as the winner and the onlookers begin to cheer — before they are quickly silenced by the groom, who draws his arm back to deal a hard blow to the back of his wife's head.

The stunned bride stumbles onto her maid of honour from the force of the blow as the groom stares unflinchingly into the crowd. Her friends then quietly lead her off the stage. It is unclear what happened after that.

Online users have expressed shock and outrage, not only at the violent groom but also at the lack of response or action from the wedding guests.

"Why are they acting like it's normal?" one Twitter user asked.

"Doesn't seem like this was the first time at all," another observed.

Some also drew attention to the best man, who appeared to be grinning after his friend hit the bride.

"Violence is accepted as (a) method of controlling females' behaviour (in Central Asia)," Twitter user "l_seiitbek" said when posting the video. "People see violence against women and girls as... something sad but unavoidable."

Others echoed the same disappointment: "Another wedding in Uzbekistan. Another man-child. Another slapped bride."

In 2019, a similar video seemingly taken at another Uzbekistan wedding showed the groom slapping his wife after she teased him with a piece of cake.

A separate incident from 2020 told of a husband in Kyrgyzstan repeatedly throwing buckets of cold water on his wife and slapping her in the face as she stands with car tyres filled with bricks tied around her neck.

He was disciplining his wife for visiting her sister without his permission, Eurasianet reported. It was a chilling scene, "even in Kyrgyzstan, where grisly tales of domestic violence emerge with unerring regularity", the website stated.

In the Human Rights Watch's World Report 2022, it was reported that domestic violence against women and girls remains prevalent across Central Asia, with little support or justice for survivors.

Just last year, a question was posted in "Maslahat.uz", a public Uzbekistan Facebook group: "Do you beat your wife? What's the result? What do you beat her with?"

In response to Monday's video, many Twitter users also shared their own anecdotes of domestic violence in Central Asia. They sympathised with the bride, stating that she was most likely marrying the violent groom out of societal necessity or obligation.

Sadly, none were too optimistic about what happened after the filming had stopped. There is no update on the situation for now.
