HONG KONG — A Hong Kong influencer fell to her death after losing her footing while taking photos at a popular hiking spot last Saturday (July 10).

Sophia Cheung, known for her daredevil photos on Instagram, had set off on a hike with three friends to Ha Pak Lai park in Tuen Mun around 11am that day, Hong Kong news portal HK01 reported.

Ha Pak Lai is known for its scenic views and waterfalls.

At the Tsing Dai stream around 5pm, the 32-year-old was taking photographs when she fell into the 5m deep pool below her.

British newspapers Daily Mail and The Sun reported that the woman had been taking selfies on the edge of a waterfall when she lost her footing. HK01 reported that she then drowned.

Cheung’s friends immediately called the police.

Rescuers arrived and her body was taken via helicopter to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan, where she was declared dead.

Her Instagram page is filled with photos taken on her outdoors adventures. In some, she can be seen dangling off and sitting on the edge of cliffs.

The incident adds to a string of photo-related mishaps in recent years.

In 2019, AFP reported that a 33-year-old French tourist in Thailand fell from the Na Mueang 2 waterfall in Koh Samui, Thailand while trying to take a selfie.

Earlier this year, a video went viral online of a woman who slipped and fell into a river while taking selfies near Kanakunda in Odisha, India. Her body was later recovered.

In May, seven people died after all 20 passengers on a boat in a reservoir on Java island, Indonesia moved to one side of the vessel to take a group photo.
