JOHOR BARU — A sheltered walkway linking Johor to Woodlands is being planned to make it safer for the thousands of pedestrians who cross the Causeway daily.

The proposed 1.2km path, which is expected to cost about RM15 million (S$4.9 million), will be built on the existing motorcycle lanes on both sides of the Causeway, reported news agency Bernama on Wednesday (June 19).

After visiting the proposed site at the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex, Johor’s Public Works, Infrastructure and Transportation Committee chairman Mohd Solihan Badri said the project will solve the safety issue of people walking on the same road as vehicles.

“We found (that) many bus passengers are encroaching the routes used by vehicles to beat traffic before continuing their journey by public transport when they reach the other (Singapore) side,” he told reporters during the visit.

Mr Solihan noted that last year, 60 per cent of the people who used the Causeway were pedestrians.

TODAY previously reported that an estimated 300,000 people cross the border daily.

“Consultants are preparing a detailed proposal for the state government to study and it should be ready in about two or three weeks,” he added.

TODAY has reached out to Singapore’s Ministry of Transport and Land Transport Authority for comment. AGENCIES
