SENAI – Johor authorities have seized 210 boxes of baby milk powder suspected to be fake.

The Johor Domestic Trade and Consumerism Ministry’s state director Khairul Anwar Bachok said the items were confiscated from Chinese medical shops and convenience stores in five locations across Johor Baru. These outlets are located in Iskandar Puteri, Taman Mutiara Rini, Taman Orkid, Taman Daya and Taman Nusa Bestari.

According to local media reports, the fake instant formula boxes were placed with the original ones on the shelves and sold at the same price as the original ones. Each was sold for about RM200 each.

The raids, were conducted last Thursday (Dec 7), and the items seized were reported to be worth about RM42,000 (S$14,000).

Speaking at a press conference in Senai on Sunday, Mr Khairul said: "This followed a report regarding a baby who suffered severe vomiting after taking infant formula that was later found to be the fake."

"The operations were conducted together with the manufacturer of the baby milk powder following a report received by the company," added Mr Khairul.

The owner of the outlets, in his 50s, claimed that he was not aware that the 1.8kg baby milk powder sold at all his five outlets were fake.

Mr Khairul said the Chemistry Department would conduct a test to determine whether the seized baby milk powder is fake.

Offenders face a RM10,000 fine or jail term of not more than three years or both, for each item exhibited. AGENCIES
