KUALA LUMPUR — A group of friends was involved in a cat-and-mouse chase with what they believed to be bogus policemen at an expressway in Kulai, Johor, the police said in a statement on Monday (June 5).
A Facebook user named "Freeman Gan WT" posted a video showing a Honda City car attempting to stop the group that was heading to Genting Highlands from Singapore.
The clip, which garnered over 25,000 shares and 3,400 comments, showed the front passenger wearing a police vest, holding a blue beacon light and giving a hand signal for them to stop.
Meanwhile, the rear passenger was seen holding a white flashing light while wearing a clown mask.
In his post, the user said that he had wanted to stop after seeing the blue light.
However, he noticed something unusual with the car occupants who were chasing them, which later led to a race to stay ahead of the fake policemen.
"As we were trying to get away, we called 999, and the police (on the phone) asked for our location, urged us not to stop, and said to go to the nearest police station if the so-called 'policemen' kept following us.
"About 71km from Kulai, we did not see them following us anymore, so we had breakfast in a crowded area around 8.10am."
The Kulai district police said that they were aware of the incident and that the Facebook user had yet to lodge a police report.
District police chief Superintendent Yusof Othman said they are still tracking down the vehicle owner to assist with police investigations.
He said that the car chase occurred when the victims travelled towards the north on the North-South Expressway (NSE) leading to Genting Highlands.
"On June 5, at about 1.52pm, a complainant, a police officer, made a police report following a viral video on Facebook posted on Freeman Gan WT's Facebook account who claimed to be involved in the car chase.
"Police checks discovered that the incident was believed to have occurred at KM41.5 northbound on NSE nearby Sedenak Plaza toll exit in Kulai.
"Three suspects of unidentified race wore face masks and used a blue beacon light to imitate a police team trying to stop the victims," he said in a statement.
The case is being investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a civil servant, which carries a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both. NEW STRAITS TIMES
