KOTA KINABALU — A Malaysian restaurateur was fined RM30,000 (S$9,964) or six months' jail by the Sessions Court in Kota Kinabalu of the East Malaysian state of Sabah for selling iced milo at an unreasonable price.
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry state deputy director V. Ravichandran, during a press conference, said businessman Shihan Mohd Salim, 28, who owns Anak Mami The Restaurant 3, had sold the beverage at RM3.20 (S$1.06), leading a customer to lodge a complaint on the excessive price on March 7, 2016.
He said the ministry hoped businessmen would take the case as a lesson not to profiteer from marking up their food prices unreasonably.
"I also would like to advise consumers to report to our ministry if there are similar cases in future," he said.
Shihan was charged under Section 21(5) of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 for failure to provide full details and receipts between Jan 2015 and March 2016 for beverages as required under Section 21(2) of the Act.
