KUALA LUMPUR — A man has been arrested after allegedly igniting fireworks from a moving car in Kuala Lumpur.

The 31-year-old suspect, believed to be a foreigner, was apprehended around 12am on Monday (Nov 13) at his employer's shop near Jalan 2/3A Pusat Bandar Utara in the Malaysian capital.

The police also seized a Proton Waja car allegedly used by the suspect during the incident.

Sentul District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari stated that the arrest was made after the police identified a video of the incident that went viral around 8.30pm on Sunday.

Police investigation revealed that the incident likely occurred on the same day as the video, said Mr Ahmad Sukarno. He added that the video clearly shows the man engaging in dangerous behaviour.

"The suspect, employed at a vegetable shop, was found to be using his employer's car to commit the act. It is also revealed that the suspect did not possess a valid driving license," he said.

"Subsequent investigations found that the suspect has no prior criminal records, and he is currently remanded for four days at the Sentul District Police Headquarters (IPD)."

He added that the case is being investigated for causing explosions with the intent to endanger life or property under Section 7 of the Explosives Act 1957.

This offence carries a penalty of seven years in prison or, a fine of RM10,000 (S$2,900), or both.

Mr Ahmad Sukarno called on the public to step forward and aid the investigation by providing any information related to the incident. NEW STRAITS TIMES
