TERENGGANU — A 49-year-old man went into a coma after he was trampled on by a herd of cows while riding his Ducati Diavel in a bike convoy in Merang on Friday (Sept 14).

Mr Anuar Abd Rahim sustained severe injuries after his machine fell on the road and 30 cows came charging at him near a Petronas petrol station in the 2pm incident.

He was part of a convoy of 20 bikers who were en route to have lunch and were making their way from Batu Rakit, Kuala Terengganu to Penarik, Setiu.

Mr Anuar’s wife, Ms Dewi Rosita Abdul Rahim, who was in the same convoy and rode her Ducati Monster about 10m ahead of her husband, said that she managed to control her machine while some of the cows came charging towards her.

When contacted, Ms Dewi, 48, said: “My husband and I were the last two riders in the convoy and the rest of the riders had safely moved away from the area. We were riding our bikes at moderate speed. Suddenly, a herd of about 30 cows which were initially on our left-hand side began charging towards us.

"One of the cows trampled on my left leg, but I could still control my bike to prevent it from falling."

She said her husband was not so fortunate as his machine fell and he was trampled on by the cows and sustained serious injuries.

Mr Anuar and Ms Dewi were eventually rushed to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu, where medical personnel informed her that Mr Anuar had suffered bleeding to his brain.

“My husband remains in the intensive care unit and is still unconscious till today," said Ms Dewi.

“The doctors have not informed me when my husband could go home, but I was told that it will depend on his condition."

She said it was the fourth year in a row that she and her husband joined the same biker’s convoy, but it was the first time they met with an accident.

Meanwhile, Setiu district police chief Deputy Superintendent Zulkifli Mat Deris confirmed the incident. THE NEW STRAITS TIMES
