KUALA LUMPUR — A man who violently slammed a cat to the ground for climbing onto his car windshield in a parking lot has been questioned by police.

The 36-year-old allegedly committed the act at a parking lot in front of a row of shophouses at Setapak on Monday (Sept 21).

It is feared that the cat had suffered serious injuries, including internal bleeding, from the abuse, Bernama reported.

The man was summoned to the Setapak police station to have his statement recorded at 11.30am on Tuesday, said Wangsa Maju district police chief Superintendent Rajab Ahad Ismail.

Footage from the closed-circuit television, which was uploaded to social media, went viral Tuesday and triggered outrage among netizens. It also spurred the police to launch an investigation into the case.

"The suspect, who does not have a criminal record, is believed to have acted consciously (to cause hurt to the cat)," Mr Rajab Ahmad added.

According to Bernama, the case has been classified as animal cruelty and anyone found guilty faces a RM50,000 (S$16,500) fine, a year's jail, or both. NEW STRAITS TIMES
