SINGAPORE — Football fans and social media users worldwide are still talking about Morocco's historic win over Portugal at the World Cup quarter-finals last Saturday (Dec 10), with Twitter still abuzz with reactions to the shocking 1-0 victory.

Morocco is the first African and Arab country to reach a World Cup semi-final and social media lit up with scenes after the match.

Here are some of the moments that have gone viral since then.

1. Moroccan winger’s joyous jig with his mother

In a viral scene that has touched the hearts of millions of viewers, 29-year-old midfielder Sofiane Boufal invited his mother onto the pitch after the final whistle to join in the jubilant celebrations.

The adorable duo were seen holding hands and dancing in a circle to the music inside Al Thumama Stadium. The French-born footballer then embraced his mother and planted several kisses on her head as they walked and waved at fans together.

“For me, my mum is the most important thing in my life,” Boufal said after Morocco’s round-of-16 match win over Spain last Tuesday (Dec 6), Yahoo News previously reported.

“Of course (she was crying), the emotions in this game make you crazy. The support of your family is the most important thing.”

The North African team’s defender Achraf Hakimi and head coach Walid Regragui were also spotted embracing their mothers in the stands.

2. ‘Like father, like son’: Goalkeeper’s son steals hearts

A video of the Atlas Lions’ star goalkeeper Yassine Bounou spending quality time with his son Isaac on the field after the quarter-final match has also gone viral on social media.

Running around while wearing his father’s gloves that were much too big for him, the boy can be seen passing the ball around with his father and pretending to save goals by falling on his side.

Fans could be heard cheering the boy on from the stands.

Online users were tickled by the boy’s antics of imitating his father and predicted that he would follow in his footsteps of becoming a football player one day.

One person commented: "The cutest thing I have seen in a while".

Another wrote: "The kid and his dad stayed in the stadium after the game…? Tells a lot (about) how dedicated they are, folks."

Some fans have dubbed 31-year-old Bounou the best goalkeeper of the tournament. After five matches at the World Cup in Qatar, the man has yet to concede a goal from an opposition player.

3. Moroccan player gratefully kisses Pepe’s head after he misses goal

The quarter-final match saw Portugal’s most experienced player Pepe miss a chance to score a late equaliser for his nation when his header went wide and missed its target by a fine margin.

Moroccan defender Jawad El Yamiq was so delighted by this, he came up to kiss the 39-year-old veteran’s head as a gesture of thanks. However, Pepe was too busy coming to terms with his miss that he did not seem to realise what El Yamiq had done.

It did not take long for internet users to flood social media with their reactions to the incident.

Many of them found the act hilarious, while some said that it was a display of poor sportsmanship.

4. Moroccan players celebrate win with Palestinian flag

Moroccan players unfurled a Palestinian flag alongside their nation’s own in a pointed show of solidarity during their on-pitch celebrations after the win against Portugal.

This is the third time Moroccan players have raised the Palestinian flag after winning a match.

The move has been hailed by pro-Palestinian supporters on social media, as users from the Arab world celebrated Morocco's win.

Videos circulating on social media also show Palestinians celebrating in the streets of several cities in the West Bank and in Gaza, American news channel CNN reported.

The Atlas Lions is the only squad left in the tournament not ranked in the top 15 by Fifa.

“We are the Rocky Balboa of this World Cup,” head coach Walid Regragui was quoted by several news media as saying, referring to the resilient boxer played by Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone in the Rocky movies.

“We are the team that everyone loves in this World Cup because we are showing the world you can succeed even if you don’t have as much talent and money.”
