Chain collision on Causeway involving a few lorries and 2 cars leaves at least 1 person injured

SINGAPORE — Motorists travelling from Johor, Malaysia to Singapore via the Causeway on Thursday (Oct 13) morning were delayed for more than an hour, after several vehicles were damaged in a chain collision that resulted in at least one injury.

Photos and videos on social media show at least two cars and several lorries damaged in the accident, which was said to have occurred at around 9.30am. 

One video shows a lorry colliding into a car from behind, pushing it into a stationary lorry at its right.

The moving lorry then continues down the lane and crashes into another car behind another lorry.

The second car is seen being crushed in that video between the two lorries.

Another video shows the first car that was pushed into the stationary lorry to be a white Toyota, with its rear badly damaged.

In a Facebook post, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said that at about 9.45am, two out of three lanes on the Causeway were blocked due to the accident.

It added that travellers entering Singapore via Woodlands Checkpoint should expect delays.

About two hours later, ICA said that the tailback of departure traffic from Malaysia had subsided and that travellers are advised to check One Motoring website before embarking on their journey.

Malaysian newspaper Sin Chew Daily reported that the Johor Fire and Rescue Department was notified at 9.13am and deployed 11 firefighters in three rescue vehicles to the scene.

Firefighters used special tools to free a driver who was trapped in one of the cars. He was later taken to the hospital in an ambulance, the department said in a statement.

Mr Cyril Tang, 29, a car-wash business owner from Johor Bahru who arrived in Singapore in the morning, told TODAY that he saw an ambulance and the fire service arrive at the scene at around 10am.

“At the time, I was walking to the Malaysian customs when I saw emergency vehicles rushing to the scene. By the time I got onto the bus heading to Singapore, the traffic flow had improved,” he said.

He added that the vehicles involved in the crash that he saw from his bus included two long loaded trailers, a white Toyota car and a brown Perodua Bezza car, which was “heavily damaged and crushed”.

TODAY has reached out to the South Johor Bahru Traffic Police for comments.

Earlier on July 7 this year, a lorry crashed into 11 vehicles on the Causeway leading to Woodlands Checkpoint in the morning. A 34-year-old Malaysian lorry driver was later arrested.
