SINGAPORE — As she was trying to put her baby to sleep at around 11.30pm on Tuesday (Feb 16) and her husband was watching television in the living room, they heard shouting and quarrelling coming from downstairs.

“We heard a man shouting: ‘Come here, come here! Follow me! Don’t run away!’ It was very loud,” said the 33-year-old housewife, who wanted to be known only as Ms Tan.

Suddenly the commotion ended.

The pair, who live on the ninth floor of Block 309, Jurong East Street 32, rushed to their balcony to see what was going on.

They were met with a scene that shocked them — a woman was lying at the foot of the opposite block, Block 308, covered in blood. A man was applying pressure to her neck to stop the bleeding.

The 34-year-old woman, whom TODAY understands is a Malaysian national, succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital at around 1.30am, according to police.

A 35-year-old man, whom TODAY understands is a Chinese national, will be charged with her murder on Thursday.

TODAY also understands the pair were in a relationship.

Another resident of Block 309 also witnessed the aftermath of the incident after hearing a loud scream.

Student Esther Ling, 18, rushed to her corridor where she also saw the woman lying on the ground.

“There was someone trying to help her. It looked like he was trying to hold her up,” said Ms Ling, who lives on the fifth floor of Block 309.

Ms Tan said she and her husband did not see the whole incident.

“We don’t know what exactly happened... All we saw was a lady on the floor with a lot of blood around her and a guy on top of her. There were others walking around them in quite a frantic state,” she said.

Ms Tan said that she and her husband initially thought that the woman had been quarrelling with the group of men and had been attacked by them. She said the men hang around the residents’ corner of her block every night.

Other neighbours told TODAY that while they also heard a lot of noise coming from below, they did not think much of it as this group of men were often loud.

“We quickly realised they were the ones actually helping her. The girl wasn’t moving. There was a lot of blood. My husband called the police and they arrived with an ambulance shortly after,” Ms Tan said.

She and her husband then went downstairs to take a closer look of what was happening.

While they were unable to stand too close to the scene, Ms Tan said that the woman appeared to be responsive while she was being transferred to the ambulance.

“The paramedics were trying to keep her conscious and she was replying to them. She even signalled to them that she was okay with her fingers,” Ms Tan said.

“I was so worried about her, but I really thought she was okay. That’s why when I read the news this morning and saw she died, I was very sad.”
