SINGAPORE — A person sustained burn injuries and was taken to hospital after a fire broke out at hawker stalls at Marsiling Lane Market and Food Centre on Thursday (May 11) morning.

Responding to TODAY’s queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it was alerted to the fire at Block 20 Marsiling Lane at around 8.20am.

About 40 people self-evacuated from the hawker centre prior to SCDF's arrival. The SCDF did not provide further details on the person taken to Singapore General Hospital.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the fire originated in the kitchen area of one of the fire-affected hawker stalls, SCDF said.

The fire involved the contents of kitchen exhaust ducting, it added.

SCDF personnel used a water jet to extinguish the fire.

A clip posted by TikTok user “12love304” shows fire burning through the kitchen duct above the hawker stalls, with onlookers watching from a distance.

Another video clip posted by Facebook user Hong Choon Lim shows thick smoke billowing out of the hawker centre, with the flame still burning fiercely inside the building.

The police told TODAY that no foul play is suspected.

SCDF reminded the members of public, especially stall holders, to prevent fires involving kitchen exhaust ducts by following these safety tips:

  • Do not leave cooking unattended
  • Keep the stove, its surrounding area and the opening of the exhaust ducts free from grease and oil stains
  • Clean the exhaust ducts and have them maintained at least once a year
