SINGAPORE — The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said it is recalling a brand of canned clam made in Malaysia because it contained a level of cadmium that exceeded the regulatory limit here.

In a statement released on Thursday (Feb 23), SFA said that it has instructed Yee Lee Oils & Foodstuffs (Singapore) Pte Ltd, the importer of Rex Grilled Clam, to recall the implicated product as a precautionary measure and the process is ongoing.

The canned food has a "best before" date of July 4, 2025.

“Heavy metals such as mercury, lead, arsenic and cadmium are naturally present in the environment and can enter our food when the animals and plants we eat come into contact with water, soil and the seabed,” SFA said.

In particular, shellfish grow on the ocean floor and can accumulate heavy metals that have sunk to the bottom.

Based on the levels of cadmium detected, one-off consumption of the affected Rex Grilled Clam product is unlikely to be harmful, SFA added.

However, long-term intake of high levels of cadmium may cause renal dysfunction, bone demineralisation and increased risk of cancer in the lung, endometrium, bladder and breast.

SFA advised consumers who have eaten the product to seek medical advice if they have concerns about their health.

"Consumers may contact their point of purchase for enquiries."
