NEW YORK — American gaming YouTuber Desmond Amofah, popularly known as Etika, has died, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) said on Wednesday (June 26).
Police said Amofah was last heard from on June 19, after he uploaded an 8-minute long YouTube video titled 'I'm sorry', in which he spoke about mental illness and suicide.
In the clip, Amofah said: "You know I wasn't suicidal before — I really wasn't. But one thing I didn't realise was that the walls were closing around me so fast. I really had no intention of killing myself but I'd always push it too far. I guess I am mentally ill."
He also cautioned against social media, saying “it can give you an image of what you want your life to be and get blown completely out of proportion... It consumed me.”
The original video has since been removed, although copies have been uploaded by other YouTube users.
Police found Amofah's belongings along Manhattan Bridge in New York on June 19, the day he vanished, reported the New York Post. Amofah's wallet, mobile phone and Nintendo Switch were among the items discovered.
Amofah, who was 29, was most well-known for his videos discussing Nintendo games on YouTube and streaming platform Twitch. He had 356,000 followers on Twitter and 374,000 followers on Instagram.
In October 2018, Amofah's YouTube channel was deactivated after he uploaded pornography on it, reported The Verge. He then posted a message on Reddit saying: "And now, it's my turn to die. I love you all."
Amofa had also tweeted about committing suicide in April 2019, drawing concern from his fans.
