12.30am:  Queue update: The current waiting time as at 12.30am, is 8 hours.

12.25am: Government figures provided showed that as at 11pm today, 147,791 visitors have paid their respects to Mr Lee Kuan Yew at Parliament House.

11.22pm: Queue update: The current waiting time as at 11pm, is 6 hours. The public may wish to note that the queues typically move relatively faster (around 2 hours) during 4am to 9am, says the Remembering Lee Kuan Yew Facebook page.

10.19pm: Queue update: The current waiting time as at 10pm, is 5 hours, according to the State Funeral Organising Committee. However, ushers on the ground have placed the waiting time for the normal queue at between 8 and 9 hours, and the priority queue at 7 hours, our reporter says. The crowd tonight "is a lot worse than yesterday's”, an usher says.

10.13pm: The queues are still not letting up over at Padang, with thick crowds still waiting for their turn to enter Parliament House. More tents are being set up as the crowd swells there. A human jam was also spotted at one section along the Singapore River.

9.30pm: Queue update: The current waiting time as at 9pm, is about 4.5 hours.

9.16pm: Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong posts on Facebook, saying he is honored to be part of the vigil group together with fellow Parliamentarians for the Lying-in-State this morning. The people who came in to pay respects bowed, some clasped their hands in prayer; a few saluted, many wept, he said. But the one that struck him the most was an elderly lady on a wheelchair. "Despite her physical infirmities, she insisted on standing up on her own, and bowing in front of the coffin. She joins so many other Singaporeans to say their final Thank You to Mr Lee," he said.

8.20pm: Supported by two people, former Member of Parliament Teong Eng Siong, and one of Mr Lee Kuan Yew's Old Guard, paid his respects to Mr Lee after attending the Special Parliamentary Sitting in the afternoon. Mr Teong was a Member of Parliament for Sembawang from 1963 to 1979.

8.16pm: Queue update: The current waiting time as at 8pm, is about 5 hours.

8.08pm: At the tribute site at Bedok Town Centre, long lines have formed as people wait to pay their tributes to Mr Lee. Labour chief Lim Swee Say was also seen shaking hands with residents.

7.20pm: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong posts a poignant photo of his parents at the Bridge of Sighs in Cambridge on Facebook. The photo shows the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew with his wife Madam Kwa Geok Choo at the same spot during three different occasions.

The younger Mr Lee wrote that his parents took a picture there when they were students, and would try to see the bridge again every time they visited Cambridge. "The second picture was when they came for my graduation in 1974 – so I must have been standing around somewhere. The third was in old age, happy and healthy, in 2000," he reminisced.

"Now they have both left. May they rest in peace."

7pm: Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong arrives at the Marine Parade GRC community tribute site. He looked through condolence books, bowed thrice at the stage and laid a white flower on stage. He then moved over to the message boards and learnt how to fold a paper crane. As at 7pm, the total number of visitors to the site is 2,400.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Goh said he feels a sense of inspiration watching the way the country has come together. While it is a sad moment for everyone, he is touched knowing that Singaporeans are very grateful to Mr Lee and love him. "Knowing that Singaporeans felt so much for Mr Lee Kuan Yew, I felt abit easier in my heart. So the heaviness became a little lighter. It doesn't mean you're happy, you're not sad anymore...I was being lifted by overwhelming support and love Singaporeans had for Mr Lee."

On his thoughts while in the special parliamentary session earlier this afternoon, Mr Goh said: "Somehow we just felt that he should have been there, that was what was on my mind."

6.30pm:The State Funeral Organising Committee issues a statement, saying the funeral service for Mr Lee Kuan Yew will be held at National University of Singapore's University Cultural Centre on Sunday (March 29), from 2pm to 5.15pm. Before that, there will be a funeral procession from Parliament House to UCC at 12.30pm which will be telecast live on national television and online.

The procession will cover 15.4km and pass significant landmarks such as Old Parliament House, City Hall, the Padang, NTUC Centre and Singapore Conference Hall; as well as heartland areas.

The funeral service at UCC will be attended by members of the late Mr Lee’s family, the President of Singapore, Cabinet Ministers, the Judiciary, Members of Parliament, and foreign leaders as well as some Singaporeans from all walks of life. The Master of Ceremony will be Mr Peter Ong, Head of Civil Service.

Ten eulogies will be delivered during the funeral service, including his eldest son Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, second son Lee Hsien Yang, President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and former Ministers Ong Pang Boon and S. Dhanabalan. After the funeral has concluded, Mr Lee will make his final journey to Mandai Crematorium. The cremation service will be private.

6.15pm: Queues are unrelenting at Padang, with queue times back at 8 hours. Here's a video showing the never-ending stream of people joining the queue.

6.10pm: A sand sculpture was spotted near East Coast Park E2, bearing Mr Lee's image, his initials, and the Singapore skyline. It has been there since this morning and was constructed by Mr Alvin Lee of Castles Can Fly and his volunteers.

6.05pm: Queue update: The current waiting time as at 6pm, is about 8 hours. Members of the public are advised not to join the queue now.

5.37pm: Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Ministry of Education and MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC, Indranee Rajah

"The real secret of his enduring bond with Singaporeans is that we all fundamentally understood that the vision, the drive and the intellect were all powered by one thing - he cared. He cared deeply for Singaporeans and Singapore and all his actions were driven by a desire to make things better for them. Singapore was his life’s work."

5.30pm: MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, Christopher De Souza:

“Regardless of race, language or religion” – it is a conviction Mr Lee held dear, and one which all Singaporeans are assured of. That conviction of Mr Lee’s was and continues to be of immense significance - an immense assurance – to Singaporeans who are from ethnic minorities, including the Eurasians. "

5.25pm: Nominated MP, Chia Yong Yong:

"Some say that he was ruthless, unforgiving, unrelenting. But children of his political foes had rights and opportunities like any other children. They were able to enter professions, able to become lawyers, doctors, public servants. Because, this is Singapore."

"I am convinced that if I were born in Singapore in an earlier era, or if I were born in a similar era, but in another Asian country, I would not, being a girl with a disability coming from a poor family with no connections, I would not have been able to go to school, enter a profession and serve the community today."

5.20pm: Minister of State, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Communications and Information, Sim Ann:

"Mr Lee has never described himself as a feminist, and yet his policies had made an immense difference to women."

"Mr Lee’s language policy stands among the iconic legacies he has created for Singaporeans."

5.12pm: MP for Sembawang GRC, Vikram Nair:

Mr Nair quoted a few lines from one of the poems contained in the book ‘A Tribute to the Great Man Lee Kuan Yew 90”

5.05pm: Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Masagos Zulkifli:

"Mr Lee established an administration that was transparent, eradicated corruption and crime."

3.45pm: Special Parliamentary sitting: Parliament will have a special sitting at 4pm today, to pay tribute to Singapore's founding Prime Minister, the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew. 

  • Speaker of Parliament, Halimah Yacob, will make introductory remarks before Parliamentarians pay tribute
  • Eleven MPs will  pay homage to Mr Lee Kuan Yew, including leader of the House Ng Eng Hen and Opposition leader Low Thia Khiang
  • One minute of silence will be observed at the end of the tribute.

3.38pm: Tangs announces on Facebook that its store in Orchard will be closed on Sunday (March 29) as a mark of respect for the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Metro had announced a similar move yesterday. 

3.35pm: Umbrellas are being given out at the entrance to the Padang. There are also signs encouraging the public to return them at the exit for others to use.

3.25pm: Among the army of cleaners is 57-year-old Mr Chai, who has been clearing trash from the Padang area non-stop since his shift began at 8am today. "I had a break during lunch but until now I have not had any rest yet. We have to constantly walk around to clear the rubbish...If there are more people we may have to work overtime depending on instructions."

3.15pm: The Umbrella Brigade: The queue currently stretches from the Padang all the way to the Parliament House, a snaking mass of umbrellas as the tents provide inadequate shade.

3.10pm: Queue update: The current waiting time as at 3pm is 4.5 hours.

2.40pm: The National Junior College choir performed "Home", by Dick Lee, today at Parliament House as members of the public continued to stream in to pay their respects to Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

2.30pm: Acts of kindness: At around 3am at Hong Lim Park this morning, TODAY reader 'DC' spotted a post-it note that said "thank you for your hard work" on a box of apple pie being distributed to volunteers who were working through the night to ensure Singaporeans could pay their final respects to Mr Lee Kuan Yew. 

Heartened by the gesture, he said: "I'm sure this is something (Mr Lee Kuan Yew) would appreciate since he has always been one who fought so hard for workers during his lifetime on earth."

2.10pm: Queue update: As at 2pm, the estimated waiting time is 4 hours.

The public may start queuing from the Padang (City Hall MRT). Please note that the queue at Hong Lim Park has been discontinued.

1.48pm: Trash watch: As crowd stays hydrated, bins along the queue route near Cavenagh Bridge overflow with bottles. Cleaners are clearing the bins near the entrance to Parliament House, along the Singapore River.

1.45pm: Queue update: The current waiting time as at 1pm is 3.5 hours.

1.40pm: Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop visited the Singapore High Commission in Canberra today to sign the condolence book for the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

1.30pm: Spotted: Taiwanese model turned actor Allen Chen who has been queuing for an hour and 40 mins to pay his respects to the late Lee Kuan Yew

1.10pm: Sheikh Hamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan from the United Arab Emirates ruling family arrives at the Parliament House to pay respects to Mr Lee Kuan Yew. He is received by Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

1pm: Acts of kindness: Businesses and others working in the Central Business District continue to offer those waiting in line to pay respects to Mr Lee Kuan Yew a bit of respite.

Outside the Asian Civilisations Museum, Marigold is giving away 7,500 bottles of their drinks away to the members of the public waiting in line. They will continue through to Saturday. 

Volunteers from Timbre Group have set up a water point offering bottled water to members of the public in the queue.

12.35pm: Stay hydrated: A lady faints at the Padang and is carried away by emergency services. 

Temperatures will range between 25 and 34 degrees celsius today.

12.30pm: Spotted:  DPM Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob and Law Minister K Shanmugam were seen out and about, thanking the people in line for taking the time off to pay respects to Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

12.02pm: Spotted: Malaysian PM Najib Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor arrives at Parliament House where he is received by PM Lee Hsien Loong, his wife Ho Ching and Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

11.45am: Spotted: NTUC Secretary-General Lim Swee Say was at the Padang to greet and thank members of the public who were waiting in line. He also reminded them to drink plenty of water. 

11.30am: Later today at 4pm, 11  MPs will pay homage to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew at a special Parliament sitting, including leader of the House Ng Eng Hen and Opposition leader Low Thia Khiang.

11.15am: Spotted: DPM Teo Chee Hean arrives at the Padang, where he thanked a few people in line for coming down and spoke to a few army officers.

11am: People from all walks of life are seen in the queues. Despite being 9 months and 2 weeks pregnant, Miss Joey Choh is standing in line to pay her last respects to Mr Lee Kuan Yew. She's about to pop any time, but she said: "I am thankful for his contributions to Singapore."

10.45am: Queue updateThe current waiting time as at 10am is 1.5 hours.

There are currently 3 queues:

  • Priority line: St Andrew's Road, along the stretch of the upcoming National Art Gallery (the former Supreme Court and City Hall)
  • Padang queue 1: St Andrew's Road, to the Parliament House entrance near the Supreme Court
  • Padang queue 2: From the Padang to under Anderson Bridge, emerging along the Singapore River

10.40am: Queue update: As the crowds build up, Police have formed a human barricade to direct the traffic. 

Ushers say the public can join the priority queue along St Andrew's Road, but priority will be given to big groups that continue to arrive, such as this group of students.

10.20am: ESM Goh Chok Tong says a tribute site has been set up at Marine Parade CC. Here are other tribute sites located islandwide. 

10am: Visitors are streaming into Parliament House at a steady rate as of 10am.

9.45am: Large groups are arriving to pay their respects, with some coming by the bus loads. 

Armed with stalks of white roses and black ribbons pinned to their shirts, more than 100 staff from International SOS (Asia) joined the queue to pay their respects to Mr Lee Kuan Yew at the Parliament House. The firm's president and chief executive officer said Mr Lee Kuan Yew's pro-business policies provided a platform for companies set up firms in Singapore. The medical risk firm was set up here in 1985.

9.30am: As of midnight, 59,240 people have paid respects at Parliament House, and 41,000 condolence cards have been issued.

8.35am: Queue update: As of 8.30am, the queues at the Padang were seen moving quickly and smoothly.

8.30am: Priority queue and portable toilets: Signs for priority queues are more clearly displayed today. A special lane has been set up at the Padang for the elderly, pregnant women, school children, families with children under 6-years-old and those with special needs.

The priority queue is located along the side of St Andrew's Road where the National Art Gallery is being constructed.

Portable toilets have also been set up before the entry point of the queue at the Padang.

8.11am: US Presidential delegation: Channel NewsAsia reports that former United States President Bill Clinton will lead a delegation from the US for the State Funeral Service of Mr Lee Kuan Yew on March 29.

The delegation will include Henry Kissinger, former US Secretary of State, Kirk Wagar, US Ambassador to the Republic of Singapore, Steven Green, former US Ambassador to Singapore, and Thomas Donilon, former Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs.

7.51am: Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak will be in Singapore today to pay his final respects to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew at the Parliament House.

7.08am: Queue update: The current waiting time as at 6am on 26 Mar 2015 is 3 hours.

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has covered the Padang with tents and metal fences to guide expected crowds.  The tentages are positioned to provide people in the queue with some shelter from the sun later. So far, queues are being cleared quickly and the Padang is mostly empty. 

Many members of the public queued in the wee hours of this morning, with many arriving via MRT trains which are now running round the clock to cater to the overwhelming response. More photos here.

6.10am: The authorities continue to distribute water to those waiting in line. 

6am: Paying your last respects to Mr ‪‎Lee Kuan Yew‬? Queues start from 7am at Padang

Authorities are now directing people to the start of the queue, located on the Padang. 

4.40am: Long queues could be seen around Adelphi mall and on the edge of the Padang. The crowd is noticeably younger, with many dressed in office attire. Some were also seen in their school uniforms. Compared to daytime queues, overnight queues are being cleared at a relatively faster rate. 

4am: Overnight trains: MRT trains ran overnight but at a reduced frequency. At between 4am to 5am, trains at Dhoby Ghaut MRT arrived every 15 minutes.

Most of the seats on overnight trains on the North South Line were filled, with some seats to spare. The majority of passengers alighted at City Hall MRT on the way to the Padang, where new queues have formed.
